Rainforest Congo World Masks
In the traditional lifestyle of the Alto Xingu and Amazon River regions the people paint themselves daily. Some rainforest cultures believe we demonstrate our humanity by painting ourselves. By our ability to transform ourselves, we separate ourselves from the animals who must remain the same, while we can become anything we want.

For Journey to South America weekend in August 2000, Bronx Zoo visitors were invited to be painted in a style inspired by the body art of the people of the Amazon Rainforest.

Zoogoers would choose a specific rainforest animal, or give us a key word such as strong or fast. Using modern make-up with a wider color palette, and inventing our own symbolic shapes and patterns based on native designs, our company transformed hundreds of adults and children.
