In
the summer of 1999, the Bronx Zoo opened their first major new
exhibit in 15 years: the Congo Gorilla Rainforest, recreating
the environment of a Central African rainforest to house their
great apes. In keeping with the authenticity of the exhibit,
Transformation! Facepainting researched African masks and facepainting,
particularly from the Congo region, and created an original
style that blended these influences with the actual appearance
of the animals in the exhibit. Ten facepainters for ten weekends
transformed thousands of zoo visitors into African art. |
